God’s Well Dressed Woman

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone.  Forgive as the Lord forgave you.  And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”  Colossians 3:12-14 NIV

As women, we love to look our best, and for the most part we enjoy putting on a pretty outfit to make us feel beautiful.  As daughters of the King of kings, we can appreciate this portion of scripture in Colossians 3:12-14 because in just a few words we are told so much.

First, we are God’s chosen people, holy (meaning set apart), and dearly loved.  Think about this, the God of the Universe chose you!  It is so easy to get lost in the crowd, but I would like for you to take a moment and make these verses your own.  He chose you.  You are His holy one, set apart for His purposes and collaboration in bringing hope to a desperate world.  Perhaps to someone in your own family, or at the office, or school; even in the supermarket or at the doctor’s office.  Wherever there is a beating heart, there is an opportunity to be used by the Lord.05_Flatbed_2 - JUNE Original Filename: 76548479.jpg

He also tells you that you are dearly loved!  So out of this great love that God has for you, He advises you to put on (Yes, we do the “putting on”) these heavenly, lovely garments: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  Next we are told to bear with each other and forgive one another.  We are to forgive as the Lord has, and continues to, forgive us on a daily basis.  Wow!  Quite a tall order wouldn’t you agree?  However, we have no excuse because this loving Lord would not ask of us to do something we were not capable of doing.  Through the help of the Holy Spirit and as we grow in knowing our God better, we are able to “put on” these garments.

Finally, every lady knows it is the finishing touches that bring an entire look together, and in this portion of scripture that finishing touch is LOVE.  We serve the God who Himself is Love, and it states in James 2:8 that the Royal Law of His Kingdom is Love.  Therefore, everything we do and say, and even the very essence of who we are needs to be motivated in love; which binds everything together.  Love is what holds this spiritual outfit all together and makes it beautiful.  In view of all this, the next time you are contemplating that new dress, with those perfect shoes and that utterly perfect scarf; remember to put on your spiritual outfit as well.  Compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, all fully accessorized with Love.  These virtues will insure that you are God’s well dressed woman for every occasion.
