“The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” Proverbs 18:10 NIV
In William Shakespeare’s play, “Romeo and Juliet,” Juliet questions the validity of Romeo’s essence by the often quoted comparison “What is in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.” To which the proverbial answer would be “yes,” a rose by any other name would still contain the same aroma that draws us to its beauty.
During ancient times God revealed His character to the people of Israel, by using different variations of His name. Let us take a look at some of the names given in scripture by which our God reveals Himself: Jehovah Jireh, my Provider; Jehovah Nissi, you reign in victory; Jehovah Shalom, my prince of peace; Jehovah Raffa, you’re my healer; Jehovah Shama, Lord, you’re always with me; Jehovah Sabaoth, strong deliverer. It is because of who God is that we give Him glory and we give Him praise. He is worthy of all our adoration and gratitude each and every time we experience Him through His Names. Truly the Name of the Lord is a fortified tower, where we can run to it and are be safe as this verse declares. Whether we need provision, or peace, or healing; or to know He is always there with us, the Name of the Lord is all encompassing and sufficient. The name “Jesus,” is at times all we can bring ourselves to pray, and yet immediately He is there. Acts 4:12 says, “is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved”.
Suffice it to say, that when it comes to our God and we ask, what is in a name? The resounding answer is – It is ALL in a Name!
